International gold coins: compare the exact issue

A practical approach to mint, currency, specification and collector premiums.

01

Start with issuer and specification

International coins offer a wide range of designs, sizes and histories. Record the mint or issuing authority, year, fine gold content, purity and finish. A coin’s currency denomination is usually distinct from its market value; it should not be used as a shortcut for the quantity of gold contained.

02

Familiar names can hide differences

A coin series may include different sizes or specification changes across years. Do not assume that every Panda, Libertad or other named issue has the same weight. For a certified item, check that the label matches the exact year, size and issue stated in the quotation.

03

Local demand affects resale

Recognition among buyers, available supply and collector interest can influence a premium. An international issue that is attractive to one collector may not command the same premium from another dealer. Ask how the dealer separates the metal value from the issue-specific value when making a buying offer.

04

Tax and total costs

Do not extend a statement about UK legal-tender coins to all international coins. Tax treatment depends on the product, transaction and owner. Compare the total payable and obtain independent tax advice where relevant. Choose the actual product you understand, rather than relying solely on a country name or a grading label.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Understand the product.
Ask about the details.

Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
