MS and PF answer different questions
MS denotes Mint State and PF is NGC’s abbreviation for proof. PCGS normally uses PR for proof coins. These prefixes describe the type or state of the coin under the service’s system. They are not interchangeable names for gold purity or for the quality of the investment.
Understanding a 70 grade
NGC’s 70 standard concerns the absence of post-production imperfections at five-times magnification. It is a condition assessment, not a statement that the coin is rare or underpriced. A 69 and a 70 may trade at different premiums, and that price difference can change with collector demand.
Cameo and other label wording
Cameo designations describe contrast between the raised design and surrounding fields on qualifying coins. Terminology differs by service. Other label wording may relate to an issue, release programme or signature. Ask what each element means rather than treating every additional label phrase as evidence of scarcity.
Compare the premium explicitly
Request quotations for the same issue in comparable grades and holders. Ask what evidence supports the premium and how a buying quotation might differ from a selling quotation. There is no assurance that the extra amount paid for the highest grade will be recovered on resale.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Understand the product.
Ask about the details.
Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
