Read the unit and currency first
The header shows indicative gold and silver references in pounds sterling, per troy ounce and per gram. Those numbers describe a market reference, rather than the price of a particular finished coin or bar. Check the timestamp and whether the feed reports a delay or an unavailable quote.
From market reference to finished product
Manufacturing, sourcing and distribution are reflected in product pricing. A collectible issue can also include a premium for condition or collector demand. The full payable amount may include further charges. You cannot assume that a dealer will sell a finished product, or buy one back, at the headline spot reference.
Why currency matters
Gold is often discussed internationally in US dollars. A sterling buyer is also affected by the relationship between sterling and the dollar. A movement reported in a dollar headline may therefore differ from the movement in a sterling quotation. Compare like-for-like currencies and time periods.
A practical comparison method
Write down the exact product, fine weight, quotation time and total payable. Compare a second quotation for the same specification as close in time as possible. Ask when the agreed price becomes fixed. This makes the live reference useful context without confusing it with an executable offer.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Understand the product.
Ask about the details.
Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
