Gold purity: carats, fineness and fine weight

Read 22 carat, 999 and 999.9 correctly before comparing products.

01

Two ways to express purity

Carats describe the proportion of gold on a scale of 24. Fineness describes parts per thousand: 999 means 99.9% gold, while 999.9 means 99.99%. Those markings are different. Always transcribe the actual specification rather than rounding a product up to a higher purity.

02

Gross weight is not fine gold weight

Gross weight includes any other metals in the alloy. Fine gold weight is the gold itself. A 22 carat coin contains other metals, so its overall weight must be greater than its fine gold content. Compare the fine content stated for the particular issue, rather than treating every coin of a similar diameter as equivalent.

03

Purity is not a coin grade

A grade such as MS70 describes assessed condition under a grading service’s standards. It does not mean 70% purity. Likewise, a high-purity coin can have surface marks. Keep metal specification, condition and certification as separate checks when reading a listing.

04

What to ask for

Request the mint or refiner specification, weight unit and fineness. If the description and photograph disagree, resolve the difference before buying. Do not scratch, file or chemically test a collectible coin yourself: damage can reduce its appeal and value.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Understand the product.
Ask about the details.

Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
